Surface Design on Clay Workshop
with Jenny Dowd

Explore creative ways to enhance your ceramics through texture, pattern, and color. Learn techniques like carving, stamping, sgraffito, and underglaze decoration to bring your clay surfaces to life. All materials provided—no experience necessary!
This one day workshop will cover the basics of decoration techniques for leather-hardgreenware as well as how to transfer imagery from paper (or your imagination) to the side of a pot. We will cover: water etching, sgraffito, inlay, and mishima techniques as well as monotype, and slip transfers.Students are encouraged to bring damp pots and test tiles of their favorite clay. Damp test tiles of porcelain and stoneware will also be provided and we will use underglaze and slip for these techniques.
Before lunch break:Introduce water etching, sgraffito, inlay techniques – prep test pieces and allow them to dry until the afternoon.
After lunch break:Make your own re-useable stencils and also learn how to transfer imagery onto the surface of your pottery.Practice water etching, sgraffito, and inlay techniques.Introduce slip transfers and monotype printing on clay.
