Raku- Fast Fire Techniques

with Shawn Greenwood

$245

In this 6 week class students will learn traditional Raku firing techniques. Raku is a post firing reduction process that creates beautiful surfaces by placing the pottery in combustible materials such as newspaper, leaves, or sawdust while at top firing temperature. Students will spend the first 3 weeks throwing, coiling, pinching, or hand building forms to fire in the last 3 weeks of raku reduction firing process. We will explore raku glazes, horsehair and feather, obvara, and naked raku finish. All Supplies, materials and kiln support are provided in the price of the class.

Students are required to wear closed toe shoes (leather is recommended), long pants and long sleeves, preferably made of cotton or other natural fiber (avoid synthetics that may melt). Long hair must be tied back, no dangling jewelry. . In the case of rain, gusting wind, or inclement weather, outdoor firings will be rescheduled.

This is a hands- on, interactive class dealing with unpredictable elements such as open flame and smoke. Appropriate safety precautions will be taken and provided by the instructor. Students participate at their own risk.

If you have taken other wheel classes, but always wanted to try the challenge of Porcelain, this is a great class too! If you are ready to fall in love with pottery, this is the class you are looking for!

NOTE: This is an Intermediate Course, basic understanding of Wheel or Hand building techniques is a prerequisite. While students will have access to the wheels for the first 3 classes, No Wheel Throwing instruction will be provided.
