Raku- Fast Fire Techniques
with Shawn Greenwood
In this 6 week class students will learn traditional Raku firing techniques. Raku is a post firing reduction process that creates beautiful surfaces by placing the pottery in combustible materials such as newspaper, leaves, or sawdust while at top firing temperature. Students will spend the first 3 weeks throwing, coiling, pinching, or hand building forms to fire in the last 3 weeks of raku reduction firing process. We will explore raku glazes, horsehair and feather, obvara, and naked raku finish. All Supplies, materials and kiln support are provided in the price of the class.
Students are required to wear closed toe shoes (leather is recommended), long pants and long sleeves, preferably made of cotton or other natural fiber (avoid synthetics that may melt). Long hair must be tied back, no dangling jewelry. . In the case of rain, gusting wind, or inclement weather, outdoor firings will be rescheduled.
This is a hands- on, interactive class dealing with unpredictable elements such as open flame and smoke. Appropriate safety precautions will be taken and provided by the instructor. Students participate at their own risk.

Metal Sandcasting
with Eugene Sargent
This class will introduce students to sand casting, in a miniature bench top setting! Sand casting is usually considered an industrial technique of metal casting, but it can actually be quite accessible and fun for artists. Although it is not as refined as lost wax (investment) casting, sand casting has the major advantage of being fast and cheap with all materials being recycled and no waiting time for making the molds. Each student will make small castings out of aluminum and bronze. We will cover some basics of pattern making and what makes a good pattern, and we will experiment with carving molds directly in the sand. At the end of the class, students will have the understanding and a list of where to get materials and tools to set up their own small (or not so small) sand foundry.
Pottery Wheel 3

Each student will have their own Singer Sewing machine to learn on. Each lesson is structured to teach specific techniques which are used to create the project and to build on each other. We will explore different construction methods designed to make your sewing experience fun and rewarding. Students will learn the fundamentals of sewing and using a sewing machine.
This class is an introduction to sewing on a sewing machine. So, if you are brand new at sewing and want to have a chance to learn some basics, this is a great place to start. On the first day of class we will get acquainted with the sewing machine for the first time. Also on the first day you will create a coaster that you can take home with you. On the 2nd day of class we will start a hand sewing tools zippered pouch…yes a zipper on your first project! I’ll guide you through the process one step at a time. We will be working on this for the next couple of class meetings. Then we will be making a tote bag, which could be made to match the zippered pouch, if you like. This lined tote bag will be perfect to carry your sewing projects to and from your next sewing class. By the last class time you should be able to finish your tote bag! This is a busy class and you will be likely learning quite a lot. You’ll be quite proud to say, “I made it myself!” This is a beginning sewing adventure and a very friendly learning environment because we are all learning. Each student will have their own Singer sewing machine to work with along with everything you need to complete the projects.
